Hello,

Welcome to Franklin Class. I am Mrs Bassett and I am the class teacher. Working alongside me is Mrs Searle, who is a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, and Mrs Evans, who will be supporting with lessons and interventions. Franklin Class is made up of Year 6 pupils. I will use this page on our school website to keep you updated about our learning across the year. 

If you have any questions, please do speak to a member of staff on the gate at the beginning or end of the school day, or please contact the school office.

Forest School

In Forest School, we had the change to practise using a knife to cut and shape wood. We first practised the correct technique using a carrot and vegetable peeler. This helped us learn how to control the tools properly and the correct angle that was needed. Then, working with Forest School Leader Miss Glassup, we were able to apply our skills to cut wood with a knife.

Franklin Fest

To celebrate completing our SATs assessments, we took part in Franklin Fest. In the morning, we were cooked a delicious breakfast and after we had a silent disco. We had a fantastic time dancing with our friends to all our favourite songs. In the afternoon, as well as continuing our disco, we also had the change to make jewellery, decorate cakes and paint our faces. We had a fantastic day!

The History of Light

In our science lessons, we have been learning about light. As part of this, we looked at different ways people used light in history and how it has developed over time. During this activity, we had to try and work out which inventions associated with light came first and create our own timeline.

Eco Summit Day

Across the school, we all took part in our annual Eco Summit Day. In Year 6, we looked at what climate change is and how it is affecting our world. We recognised that lots of people are working to act again climate change and we learnt that action can be at three levels: local, national and global. We researched and created information leaflets about the different types of action that can be taken to help our planet.

Hockey

We really enjoyed taking part in a hockey tournament where we were able to apply the skills we had practised in our lessons. We worked together in our teams to attack and defend effectively and we were able to move with the ball with more speed and precision. Importantly, we showed a healthy competitive spirit as we played each other with a positive attitude. 

Sculpting Gargoyles

We enjoyed using clay to sculpt our own gargoyles. We used a range of techniques including joining and adding texture to add definition to our creatures. The final pieces were fantastic and we enjoyed looking at all different gargoyles we created.

The Evacuee Experience at the Rural Life Museum

We went to the Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury to learn about how children might have experienced being evacuated during the Second World War. We arrived at the museum and we were immediately sent to be billeted in the hall. Once we had been allocated our ‘new homes’ we had a range of activities to complete. We made our own plant pots out of paper, decorated eggs to send to the soldiers at war and created our own National Identity Cards. We then learnt about the different jobs children had to do before the air raid siren went off and we had to take cover in the shelter. It was a really enjoyable day!

Building Rockets

During Science Week, we learnt about rockets and the features they need to launch successfully into orbit. We discovered that they need to be stable to prevent overspinning but also streamlined to stop the effects of air resistance. We created our own rockets and then modified them to help us find our how to make the best rocket. We recorded our observations carefully too.

Understanding Satellites

As part of Science Week, we learnt about the importance of satellites and how they can provide such a variety of information about our planet. Particularly, we discovered how satellites are used to monitor the effects of climate change and how this is impacting our world. We learnt about the parts of a satellite and then used Lego to build our own.

World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day by participating in the whole school theme based on the book ‘Someone Swallowed Stanley’. In Year 6, we wrote our own sequels to the book using our learning of biomes from earlier in the school year. In the afternoon, we created some artwork inspired by Banksy to help spread the message about looking after our planet. 

Exploring Christianity in RE

In RE, we have been thinking about the enquiry question “Is anything ever eternal?” During our lessons, we discussed the meaning of love, in particular agape. We learnt about different stories from the Bible that Christians believe demonstrate God’s love. we discussed the meanings of these stories and then had a go at acting some of them out to help us remember them.

Hockey

In PE, we have been developing and consolidating our hockey skills. We learnt about evading a defender by moving with the ball at pace and we learnt techniques to use when defending. We applied our skills to a range of small games and then competed in our interhouse hockey tournament at the end of term.

Safer Internet Day

We took part in some learning for Safer Internet Day about AI. We learnt about how AI is used and how it works. We discussed some of the positive things about AI but also the dangers it can cause. We thought about times it is ok to use AI and times when it is not ok. We enjoyed learning about being safe on the internet. 

Interhouse Bench Ball

For our half termly interhouse sporting competition, we played bench ball. All the adults were really impressed with our improved sportsmanship when playing competitively and we worked well together as a team. We also showed better resilience when we did not win a game and showed positivity.

Lemon Battery Experiment

We practised our prediction skills by using our prior knowledge and experience to predict which fruits might work as a battery. We learnt about how a battery works and the parts a battery needs so it only works when we want it too. We then had a go at creating our own lemon batteries. 

Scribble Bot STEM Workshop

We were very lucky to have the opportunity to have some visitors come and work with us for a day practising STEM skills. We created our own scribble bots using electrical components and an offset. Once we had built our scribble bots, we were able to use them to create a piece of abstract art. 

Basketball

In PE, we enjoyed our basketball lessons. We practised skills of attacking and defending, thinking about using space to evade a defender. We also learnt about moving with the ball when dribbling and began applying the double dribble rule when playing small competitive games. 

Using Data Loggers

We used data loggers in our science lessons to measure the amount of light given out from a light bulb. Using the data loggers meant we could get a more accurate reading and make better conclusions. We also learnt about finding the mean average once we had repeated the investigation.

Exploring Electricity

To begin our new Science unit, we recapped our knowledge of electricity from year 4 and completed some challenges when building circuits. We explored how to make the light bulb brighter and investigated what happened when we overloaded a circuit.

Building South America

To help us learn about the human and physical features of South America, we worked as a class to create some of the most famous features out of salt dough. We then positioned them on a map and discussed what patterns we noticed about their locations.

Celebrating Difference

In Jigsaw, we have been learning all about celebrating our differences and being respectful towards others regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds. We learnt that, while many people recognise individuality as an important thing, it can sometimes be a source of conflict. We created freezeframes to show how situations can become unkind when we do not show the values of respect to all.

Mayan Masks

In History, we have been learning all about the Mayan Civilisations. We learnt about their daily life, their religious beliefs and the structure of their cities. We practised lots of historical skills including analysing and interpreting sources and using evidence to build conclusions. At the end of the term, we invited our grown ups in to help us create our own Mayan masks and they were fantastic!

Dance in PE

During the second half of the term, we have been doing dance in our PE lessons. We have been learning about sequencing a routine by adding different shapes including freezeframes and thinking about how we can travel between movements. We used our dance skills to choreograph routines themed on Mission Impossible.

Animal Adaptation

In science, we learnt about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. We found out about Darwin’s observations of finches in the Galapagos Islands and that he noticed how different finches had different shaped beaks depending on the environment they lived. We used tweezers and chopsticks to demonstrate the importance of being able to adapt to their environment. 

Exploring Fossils

In science, we have been learning about fossils and how they are formed. We discussed the process of how a fossil is made after a living thing has passed away. We discovered how important fossils are to helping us learn what living things were like in the past. 

Forest School

We enjoyed our forest school sessions with Miss Glassup this half term. We made wonderful flower crowns whilst enjoying being outside in nature. 

Investigating Heart Rate

In our science lessons, we have been learning about the circulatory system and how exercise increases our heart rate. We planned and carried out an investigation to find out if the exercise we completed affected our recovery heart rates. We had to work as a team to measure and record our investigation accurately.

Tag Rugby

In PE, we have been playing tag rugby. We have been learning to evade an opponent through changing pace, work as a team to move forward towards the try line and pass the ball backwards whilst still progressing forwards. We then applied all our skills into small competitive games which will prepare us for our interhouse competition.

Biomes in a Box

We created our own Biomes in a Box with our grown ups at our first parental engagement workshop of the year. We used all our learning from our geography lessons to recreate a biome of our choice. Our final pieces were incredible!

Multicultural Week – Mexico

For our Multicultural Week, Year 6 studied Mexico! We learnt about the Day of the Dead and researched some of the physical and human geographical features of the country. We also learnt about Frida Kahlo and produced some of our own self-portraits inspired by her work. We learnt a dance to La Bamba and also enjoyed some nachos!

Interhouse Netball

At the end of the term, Year 6 took part in an interhouse netball competition. We thought about applying skills of passing, attacking and defending to our competitive matches. We also thought about the importance of being a good sports person and having a healthy competitive spirit.

Black History Month Workshop

Year 6 took part in a workshop with a visitor all about the Bridgwater Petition. Many years ago, the community of Bridgwater came together and every adult signed the petition to end slavery. We discussed what it would have been like to experience life as a slave and we created some artwork to promote equality and togetherness.

Exploring Blood

In science, we made our own blood to help us learn about the different components in our blood and what they do. We used different objects to represent the plasma, the platelets, the red blood cells and the white blood cell. This helped us to remember their jobs and how each part help our bodies. 

Barton Hall Residential

Year 5 and 6 went to Barton Hall for a week during the Autumn Term. We had the opportunity to take part in many activities including climbing, abseiling, raft building, zip wire and a campfire. We developed our team work skills as well as our resilience and problem solving skills. 

Lantern Making for Bridgwater Twilight

We were invited to take part in a lantern making workshop with the wonderful people from Bridgwater Carnival. We were creating fish-shaped lanterns that were part on the Bridgwater Twilight event near to the docks. We used willow to make the main shape and then added details using tissue paper. We made them waterproof using PVA glue.

Testing our Heart Rate

We investigated how heart rate would have been measured before we had technology that completed it more effectively. We discovered that scientists used the idea of a pendulum to help them measure a persons heart rate. We made our own versions to test and measure each others heart rate. 

Making the Heart

In science, we learnt about the heart. We discovered that it was a strong muscle that worked like a pump to move blood around our bodies. We created our own models to the pump to help us visualise how it worked.
