Our curriculum intent…

Is tailored to meet the needs of pupils at Northgate reflecting the historic nature of the town, its cultural diversity and the social challenges experienced by many of its pupils.
Promotes community involvement as an essential part as we celebrate local traditions, learning new skills to enable the children to take an active role in local events throughout the year, for example Bridgwater Carnival.
Provides both coverage of the National Curriculum and ensures progression from EYFS to Year 6 across all subjects.
Is designed to recognise children’s prior learning, provide first hand learning experiences, allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers.
Provides every child with the opportunity to learn which is underpinned by the teaching of basic skills, knowledge, concepts and values, with a vision to prepare them for life beyond primary school.
Ensures every child is recognised as a unique individual by celebrating and welcoming differences within our diverse school community.
Provides opportunities for pupils to understand and develop our British values.
Provides enrichment opportunities to engage learning where there are no limits to curiosity and there is a thirst for new experiences and knowledge.
Promotes positive attitudes to learning with our learning animals, which reflect the values and skills needed to encourage responsibility for learning and future success.
Ensures that pupils have the confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
Is flexible and ensures it is dynamic by responding to assessment performance (both internal and external), evaluation of pupils ongoing learning and pupil “feedback”.

Implementation

Our staff dedicate significant time and effort to ensuring the curriculum is implemented in a way that is enriching and ambitious for all children. During staff meetings and INSET days, we allocate time to review the curriculum thoroughly, ensuring full coverage of every aspect of the programme of study.

Northgate Primary School – Curriculum Implementation and Overviews

Our curriculum in its widest sense includes everything that the children experience including assemblies, after school opportunities and enrichment activities including trips and visitors to make learning come to life. Opportunities are also given to children to lead such as House Captains, sports leaders, School council, Eco council, Inspired leaders, Wellbeing champions and Lunchtime monitors.

We are confident that this approach offers a truly broad and balanced curriculum to all pupils. We aim to provide this within an ethos that celebrates diversity, supports mental health, encourages sustainability, and develops respect for the environment and for other people. This then prepares each child for the next stage in their education as they achieve at or above national expectations in end of phase outcomes.

Special Focused events are used to extend the curriculum. The school annually holds an anti-bullying week, e-safety week, science week, multicultural week, Health and wellbeing week and Children’s Mental Health week. National curriculum subject focus weeks are used on a rotational basis to raise the profile of subjects and give children extended opportunities to develop their skills. This ensures the children get a broad and balanced curriculum as they journey through the school.

Impact

Enjoyment of our creative curriculum fosters achievement, confidence, and positive behaviour. Children feel safe to explore new ideas and take calculated risks. They learn to collaborate effectively with peers while also working independently as inquisitive, motivated learners with a genuine thirst for knowledge.

Our curriculum helps pupils grow into responsible citizens who value one another, the school community, and the wider world. They show respect, tolerance, and acceptance towards people of different faiths and backgrounds.

Learners at Northgate Primary School develop detailed knowledge and skills across the curriculum and, as a result, achieve well. Information on outcomes is published on the school website at the end of each year. Results from national tests confirm that that the school consistently meets national expectations and our pupils are ready for the next stage of their education.

Rigorous triangulated monitoring is undertaken throughout the year to gauge the impact of the curriculum design and delivery. Senior Leaders and Subject Leaders monitor individual subjects: reviewing learning, evaluating pupil voice, ensuring an overview of their subjects provision across the school.

The impact of the curriculum is reviewed at the end of terms 2, 4 and 6 and progress is measured against end of year outcomes for individual pupils and for the year group.

Children with Special Needs and/or a Disability

The curriculum in our school is designed to provide access and opportunity for all children who attend the school. If we think it necessary to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of individual children, then we do so only after the parents of the child have been consulted. Intervention groups and individual precision teaching is delivered where appropriate. Refer to SEN policy

At Northgate Primary School, we believe that each child has individual and unique needs. However, some children require more support than others do. If these children are to achieve their full potential, we must recognise this and plan accordingly. We acknowledge that a significant proportion of children will have special educational needs at some time in their school career. Some of these children may require help throughout their time in school, whilst others may need extra support for a short period to help overcome more short term needs. For children with Special Educational Needs and/or a disability, in addition to the whole school aims, we strive to:

Enable every child to experience success.
Promote individual confidence and a positive attitude.
Ensure that all children, whatever their special educational needs or disability, receive appropriate educational provision through a broad and balanced curriculum that is relevant and differentiated, that demonstrates coherence and progression in learning. Our school is committed in making reasonable adjustments to meet children’s individual needs
Give children with special educational needs equal opportunities to take part in all aspects of a school’s provision, to involve parents, carers and children themselves in planning and supporting at all stages of the child’s development
Ensure that responsibility held by all staff and Governors for SEND is implemented and maintained.
