Welcome to Brunel Class!

My name is Mrs Brewer and I am the year 2 class teacher. Working in Brunel class we also have Mrs Evans, our class teacher on a Monday, Mrs Gale-Robins, our Higher Level Teaching Assistant, and our class Teaching Assistants, Mrs James-Powell and Mrs Macleay. We will be using this page throughout the year to keep you updated on our learning journey.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff on the gate in the mornings or at the end of the day.

Welcome to Brunel Class (Year 2)!

My name is Mrs Cleverly and I am the class teacher. Miss Turner (a Higher Level Teaching Assistant) and Miss Grace (1:1 Teaching Assistant) work alongside me and together we make up the Brunel Class team.

Making Binoculars

We invited our parents into school to join us in creating our own binoculars, following our visit to Slimbridge. This activity helped us work towards completing our ten nature activities and encouraged lots of imaginative thinking. The children thoroughly enjoyed being creative and working alongside their families.

Slimbridge Wildlife and Wetlands Centre

Brunel Class enjoyed a visit to Slimbridge Wildlife and Wetlands Centre this half term. We began our day by meeting Ava the Osprey and completing a special set of nature connection activities. Then, we got to explore the grounds and we learnt lots of fascinating facts about a variety of birds. Our favourite part of the day was seeing the sunbathing otter and all the different types of flamingo.

Collaborative Drawing

During our art lessons, Brunel Class have been working collaboratively with the Year 1 children. We looked at the illustrator Maurice Sendak and took inspiration from his book Where the Wild Things Are. Using the marks and textures we observed in the book, we created our own imaginative landscape artwork.

Forest School – God’s Eyes

Brunel Class had a fantastic time at Forest School this half term. We created our own God’s Eye crafts using colourful wool, showing great creativity and focus. The children worked together brilliantly and showed real perseverance throughout the activity.

World Book Day

Brunel Class enjoyed dressing up as our favourite book characters for World Book Day. We read Somebody Swallowed Stanley and designed our own creative inventions to help remove rubbish from water.

Engine Room Creative Workshop

Brunel Class enjoyed a visit to The Engine Room to participate in a creative workshop. The children created interactive projections, transformed artwork using UV pens and lights, and took part in a photo scavenger hunt. They were respectful throughout the visit and embraced the creativity of each activity, making the most of this exciting learning opportunity.

Yoga Workshop

To begin Children’s Mental Health Week, Brunel Class invited their parents to a yoga session. During the session, the children and parents learnt about the importance of self-regulation and explored calming strategies they could use at home and in school. The session was enjoyed by all, creating a lovely opportunity for families to relax, connect, and start the week with a positive focus on wellbeing.

PE – Static Balances

During our PE lessons this half term, the children have been working on their static balances. They have enjoyed balancing on a range of equipment and have shown fantastic concentration and control. Their confidence has grown each week as they explored different ways to hold still positions and challenged themselves to stay balanced for longer.

NSPCC Number Day

On Friday 6th February, the children in Brunel Class enjoyed dressing up as numbers for NSPCC Number Day. Throughout the day, they took part in a range of mathematical challenges to help raise money for the NSPCC.

Forest School

Brunel Class have enjoyed making pixie dens during their Forest School sessions this half term. They worked well together as team to design and build a miniature shelter. Their cooperation and problem-solving skills grew throughout the session as they shared ideas and supported each other.

Biscuit Decorating

As a special reward for consistently demonstrating our school values and making positive behaviour choices, Brunel Class enjoyed a fun biscuit‑decorating activity. They showed great creativity and enthusiasm as they designed their own delicious treats, and we are incredibly proud of the effort and kindness they have shown throughout the term.

Hygiene Science Experiment

Brunel Class have been learning about what animals need to survive, including the effect of germs and how they are spread. They completed an experiment to discover why using soap is so important when it comes to washing our hands.

KS1 Nativity

Brunel Class shone brightly in their Nativity performance, standing on stage to deliver their lines and sing with confidence and joy. We were incredibly proud of their hard work and the wonderful festive spirit they shared with everyone.

Christmas Cards

Brunel Class had a wonderful time creating Christmas cards alongside their parents and carers. It was a lovely opportunity for families to work together, share creative ideas, and enjoy some festive fun. The children were proud of their beautiful designs, and the classroom was filled with laughter and Christmas cheer.

Visit to Quayside Gymnastic and Trampoline Centre

Brunel Class enjoyed a visit to Quayside Gymnastic and Trampoline Centre in Bridgwater. They learnt different gymnastic skills, including the vault and balance beams, and had a go at trampolining. Great fun was had by all and the children showed fantastic teamwork, confidence, and perseverance throughout the activities. It was a wonderful opportunity to try new challenges and celebrate their achievements together.

Avalon Nursing Home

The children in Brunel Class have enjoyed visiting the residents at Avalon Nursing Home this half term. During their visits, they have taken part in a range of art and craft activities with the residents and enjoyed talking to them about their life. The best part of each visit was cuddling the rabbits!

Multicultural Creativity Week – China

During our whole-school multicultural creativity week, Brunel Class learned about China. We explored the celebration of Chinese New Year and created Chinese-inspired paper dragons with our parents and carers.

We also learned about the Chinese Lantern Parade and had a go at making our own paper lanterns.

World Mental Health Day

On Friday 10th October, the children in Brunel Class wore yellow to school to raise awareness for World Mental Health Day. As part of our activities, we took part in yoga and mindfulness colouring which are some strategies that can help us manage our emotions when we’re feeling dysregulated.

Science

In our science lessons, we have been learning about materials and their properties. As part of our investigation, we explored which material would best protect Humpty Dumpty. We wrapped an egg in various materials and dropped it from a set height, using our observation skills to examine what happened to the egg after each drop.

PE – Netball

This half term in PE, we have been learning how to play netball. We’ve particularly enjoyed practising accurate passing techniques, including the chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass.
