Intent:

By the time they leave Northgate we aim for our children to;

Have developed life skills to become responsible and effective citizens, understanding others and celebrating differences.

The purpose of the Northgate PSHE intent is to provide a framework for high quality PSHE education across phases which is accessible to all and ensures that each of our pupils will develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy, safe and prepared for life and work. At Northgate, our PSHE education aims to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives as informed and responsible citizens.

The aims of PSHE within Northgate Primary School are to enable children:

to gain accurate and relevant knowledge
to create personal understanding
to explore and understand the importance of relationships
to explore and challenge a range of values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities
to develop a range of skills and strategies to live a healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced life

The Jigsaw PSHE programme also supports the understanding of British values so that all children can make sense of their experiences, value themselves, respect others, appreciate differences and feel confident and informed as British citizens.

Implementation

At Northgate, we follow a scheme of work called Jigsaw. It is a mindful approach to PSHE and a comprehensive scheme of learning which includes emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development alongside Health and Relationships Education. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups covering six themes (puzzles) across the year. Puzzles are launched with a whole-school assembly which generate the whole school focus for the term. Each year group studies the same unit at the same time (at their own level). The knowledge, skills, language and content of each puzzle is sequentially built upon as children progress through the school.

The Six Puzzles:

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (puzzles), each containing six lessons (pieces) covering each academic year.

Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Spring 1: Dreams and Goals

Spring 2: Healthy Me

Summer 1: Relationships

Summer 2: Changing Me including RSE (Relationship and Sex Education)

Every Piece has two Learning Intentions, one specific to Relationships and Health Education (RSHE) (in purple) and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills (in green).

The various teaching and learning activities are engaging and mindful of different learning styles and the need for differentiation and the Early Years (EYFS) planning is aligned to the National Early Years Framework. Each lesson is built upon a Charter which underpins the behaviour and respect that is the basis for each lesson. Children and teachers in each class collaboratively create their own charters at the beginning of the year to ensure mutual respect and ownership.

Lessons are made up of 6 parts enabling children to:

Improve their social skills to better enable collaborative learning (Connect us)
Relax their bodies and calm their minds to prepare them for learning (Calm me)
Help the brain to focus on specific learning intentions (Open my mind)
Initiate new learning (Tell me or show me)
Participate in learning activities to reinforce the new learning (Let me learn)
Reflect on their learning and personal development (Help me reflect)

Pupils are also encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum. In doing so, children recognise their own worth, work effectively with others and become increasingly more responsible for their own development. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially; tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues they face.
