Welcome to Raleigh Class. My name is Mrs Wood and I am the year 3 class teacher. Working in Raleigh class we also have Mrs Hill and Miss. Grace. We will be using this page throughout the year to keep you updated on our exciting learning journey.

Welcome

Welcome to Raleigh Class!

My name is Mrs Wood and I am the year 3 class teacher. Working in Raleigh class we also have Mrs Hill, our Higher Level Teaching Assistant and Miss. Glassup. We will be using this page throughout the year to keep you updated on our learning journey.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff on the gate in the mornings or at the end of the day.

Learning this term

In history this term, we have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians. This also links to our narrative writing based on the book, ‘Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx’. We identified and ordered important dates on our history timeline, researched the River Nile and why it was so important, discovered facts about temples, learnt about pharaohs and also had a go at mummifying barbies!

In PE this term, the children are learning how to play cricket. Our first lessons focused on stopping the ball and returning it with control.

Our first forest school session was a huge success today and the children learnt the skill of whittling. While half of the class were out at forest school, the other half were learning about causes of climate change and they created posters suggesting ways in which we could reduce our impact on the environment.

In art this term, we have learnt about Henri Matisse and his style he called ‘painting with scissors’. The children have explored a variety of ways of printing and evaluated their artwork by suggesting what their favourite printing style was and how they would improve next time. They then created their own artwork inspired by Henri Matisse but with an Egyptian theme.

In our PSHE lessons, we have been learning about relationships. Our first lesson involved discussing the different roles and responsibilities of each member of our families and reflecting on the expectations of males and females. The children had a sorting activity but the majority of the class quickly realised that a male or a female could do any role.

Our first maths topic of the term was statistics, which the children really enjoyed. Their favourite lesson was collecting their own data from the class before turning it into a graph of their choosing.

Moon landing coding adventure

With our Space Exploration Evening next week, Raleigh class will also be spending a day completing a Moon Landing Coding Adventure. They will learn practical coding skills, as they design, write, test, and debug algorithms to guide AL the Robot on her mission to safely board a Saturn V rocket for the moon! I will post pictures shortly!

British Science Week – Curiosity

Each year group explored a different area of scientific learning, all linked to the United Nations Sustainability Goals, under the overarching question: “As scientists, how can we help the planet?” Raleigh class explored curious critters. Throughout the week, the children carried out lots of exciting research into different mini‑beasts—discovering where they live, what they eat, and why they are so important to our environment. We then invited parents in for a bug workshop, adults and children worked together to design and create their very own mini‑beast habitats. The classroom was buzzing with creativity as everyone carefully selected natural materials, discussed which creatures might move in, and proudly built their bug-friendly homes.

To continue to develop the children’s science capital, we also had Agratas in for a class assembly to tell us all about the exciting local developments happening in our area and the types of careers or opportunities may arise in the future.

World Book Day

During World Book Day, the whole class used the text ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ to think about climate and nature. We created a variety of work throughout the day. In Raleigh class, we wrote a diary entry from the perspective of the turtle and used printing techniques and mixed media to create underwater art. We also used performance dance to act out the dramatic story.

Geography – Map skills

The children looked closely at how to use an atlas, they completed a research task where they had to find information in the index, along with the coordinates needed for their location and then find the capital cities on the maps.

DT – Robot mazes

The children had to evaluate a range of maze/labyrinth games and begin thinking about how they would create their own maze game. The children then created a prototype of the maze using lego bricks.

English – persuasive language

In English lessons we are looking at persuasive adverts. The children had to plan an argument using persuasive sentence starters and language and then attempt to persuade their classmates to change their minds. We debated everlasting gobstoppers vs Mr. Wonka’s fizzing flying drink.

All parents/carers (of children in Raleigh class only) are invited to our mindfulness session on Monday 2nd February 2026 9-9:30am.

We have an exciting term ahead! The children will have the wonderful opportunity to visit Avalon Nursing Home—an experience that is always cherished by both residents and pupils. We’re also thrilled to welcome Rocksteady for a lively music workshop, and we’ll be heading to Taunton Museum to explore our history topic, from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. In addition, there’s a mindfulness workshop for parents, and to round off the half term, a creativity week with a fascinating history focus. I can’t wait to share photos of these memorable moments as they happen!

Spring A

History – Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Taunton Museum this week as part of their History learning on the Iron Age. The visit brought their topic to life, giving the children the chance to explore this fascinating period through hands‑on activities, real artefacts, and expert guidance.

Art – We have been looking at animated drawings and how certain points have a hinge to create movement. The children created split pin puppets using a template to study the design features before creating their own split pin puppets. We collaborated as a class to create a large background and recorded our animated puppets.

Science – Forces and magnets. We have had lots of fun so far with our new topic, the children have really enjoyed testing different materials to see which ones created the most friction for their wooden cars and researched John McAdam a famous engineer/road designer. We then worked on making predictions and testing our theories to classify magnetic and non-magnetic materials.

Forest School – The children used their historical skills to discuss different events from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and ordered them. They used the information they discovered to create their own miniature houses using only sticks, mud, leaves and any other natural resources they could find.

PE – In our teacher led sessions, we are working on our Cognitive strand to develop skills for secure balancing on a line and ball control skills. We have had gymnastics and Basketball with our Sports Coach this term.

DT this term involved looking at seasonal ingredients, examining food groups and designing our own healthy salads. The children practised their food hygiene and food safety skills when peeling, chopping and grating their ingredients.

Christmas Craft Parent workshop. Thank you to all the parent/carers that attended the workshop, the Christmas centrepieces looked amazing!

Maps and Compass workshop – Farmlink visited Year 3 this term to deliver a geographical workshop linking to their current topic ‘Where is Bridgwater?’ They looked at a range of maps, learnt how to use a compass, created their own aerial map of their classroom and navigated the playground using 4 key cardinal points.

Geography walk around town. We looked closely at dangers we might find around the town and spotted features that would tell us if we lived in a rural area or an urban area.

Digital Technology visit – We visited The Engine Room to watch a special screening of Dogman. The children learnt all about flip-o-rama books and were given their own templates to design their own comics back at school.

Children in Need was a great success and the children looked very snuggled in their pyjamas for the day.

Remembrance Day activities took place in every class and a lovely display was created on the front gates of the school.

Forest school took place with a focus on the changing seasons. The children identified different leaves and talked about the colours and patterns they could see. They made their own leaf crowns and showed some great teamwork.

Gaia art exhibition – Children in Year 3 were very excited to visit Bridgwater Town Hall, where they saw the amazing Gaia — a giant 7-metre model of planet Earth!

Learning this term

Welcome to the Autumn term.

Raleigh class PE lessons will take place on a Wednesday with the PE coach and either on a Thursday or a Friday with the class teacher.

On Tuesday 14th October 2025, at 2:50pm, Raleigh class will be performing their Class Assembly all about the Stone Age. They are very excited to showcase their learning to their parents and carers, so we hope to see you there.

Our learning – Autumn A

Science – Rocks and Fossils trip

We have been learning about Rocks and Fossils. We had an amazing time at the Somerset Earth and Science Centre and really enjoyed our rocks and fossils workshops. In school, we have continued our scientific investigations through comparative testing, close observation, and recording using Venn and Carrol diagrams. We have looked at sorting and classifying rocks based on their properties and uses.

In Football, we have been practising our footwork skills. We have been learning to move with balance and control, send and receive the ball to our partners and move the ball with the inside, outside and end of our foot.

Afterschool Clubs

A new school term has also seen the return of our afterschool clubs. In cooking club, the children learnt to use measuring scales, calculating how much flour they would need and doubling/halving their recipe as required.

We have many more exciting activities to look forward to this term, from Lantern making, to a trip to The Engine Room for some Digital Media workshops. Keep checking back for more info!

STEM challenge – The Sky’s the Limit

Year 3 took part in an Engineering Educates challenge which follows a three part process Ask – Imagine – Create. The children explored how engineers design, adapt, and test UAVs and use creative problem-solving to prototype aerial solutions.
