Year 6 pupils had the exciting opportunity to welcome the MP for North Somerset, Sadik Al-Hassan, to Yeo Moor this term. The visit was inspired by letters the pupils wrote last year, raising concerns about homelessness in their community. Mr Al-Hassan responded to their letters with great interest and expressed a desire to visit in person to learn more about their work.
During his visit, pupils shared their learning journey and posed thoughtful questions about homelessness in North Somerset. One pupil asked, “Since receiving my letter, what changes have been made to the cost of homes to help the homeless?” Mr Al-Hassan responded by highlighting that 39 out of every 100 homes built in North Somerset are now classified as affordable housing.
One of the lighter moments came when Mr Al-Hassan was asked who his favourite Lioness was. At the time, he wasn’t sure; however, later that evening, his office emailed to say he had realised on the way to parliament that afternoon that it was Lucy Bronze, admiring her determination to play through a tournament with a fractured leg. Coincidentally, he met Lucy Bronze at an event in Parliament that same afternoon and recorded a special message for Yeo Moor, which pupils and staff enjoyed watching during an assembly that week.
