TRAIN TO BE A QUALIFIED TEACHER WITH FUTURA

Initial Teacher Training (ITT) is a school-based route into teaching that leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It allows you to train in a real classroom environment while being supported by experienced teachers and mentors.

Our ITT programme runs over 9 months and combines practical classroom experience with structured professional learning.

GET INTO TEACHING

PRIMARY TEACHER TRAINING

We have many Primary Schools with expert mentors who can guide you through your journey to QTS. They range geographically from just outside of Bath, through Keynsham, across Bristol and then sprinkled around the M5 all the way to Bridgewater. We also link to schools in surrounding trusts.

SECONDARY TEACHER TRAINING

As much of the teaching standards are shared across the phases, the core training is delivered in a combined group. Additionally you will receive subject specific inputs; both online and in subject masterclasses held by our lead teachers in all the secondary subjects.

SCHOOL-BASED TRAINING

We place great store in the quality of our school placements which are both robust and pragmatic in the planned rate and pace of each individual’s learning journey. As well as classroom experiences we offer and expect the fullest and richest engagement in the life of our host schools.

WHY TRAIN WITH FUTURA?

  • The Futura Learning Partnership is a network of 26 schools, all committed to training and developing the teachers of the future.
  • All trainees are supported by trained and experienced mentors, with protected time allocated for mentoring.
  • We take care to place trainees in schools that suit their individual needs, including consideration of commutes and personal circumstances.
  • Our course tutors are successful practitioners with extensive experience in teacher training.
  • In previous years, we have achieved a zero-dropout rate across each cohort.

Don’t just take our word for it:

“The SCITT course has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The weekly collaborative sessions gave us the chance to share ideas and learn from subject experts across the trust.

The intensive training and practice weeks helped me develop adaptive teaching strategies that immediately improved my classroom confidence. Visiting other schools and seeing best practice first-hand was inspiring and invaluable.

I now feel fully prepared to begin my teaching career, with strong subject knowledge and the confidence to thrive.”

OUR TRAINING CURRICULUM

Our programme follows national teacher training guidance and is structured across the year, so you build confidence gradually. Each phase focuses on a different aspect of teaching, while key skills, subject knowledge, assessment and lesson planning run throughout the course.

Autumn Term 1: Creating a Climate for Learning

You will begin by learning how to establish a positive classroom environment. This includes building routines, supporting behaviour, and creating a space where pupils feel ready to learn.

You will also start observing experienced teachers and begin practising key teaching techniques with the support of your mentor.

Autumn Term 2: How Pupils Learn

In this phase, you will explore how learning works. You will look at ideas from cognitive science and how memory, explanation and practice help pupils understand and retain knowledge.

The focus is on helping your teaching promote real learning in the classroom.

Spring Terms: Developing Quality Pedagogy

As your confidence grows, the focus shifts to improving your classroom practice. You will learn how to:

  • Plan effective lessons
  • Adapt teaching for different learners
  • Use questioning to deepen understanding
  • Explain ideas clearly

You will take on more regular teaching, supported by feedback from your mentor and tutor.

Summer Terms: Assessment and Professional Behaviours

In the final phase, you will learn how to assess pupil progress and use assessment to improve learning. We will also prepare you for your first teaching role, including professional responsibilities and expectations as an Early Career Teacher.

HOW YOU LEARN

Futura invests in a blend of established and innovative teaching pedagogies, offering you a strong foundation to develop your own teaching style.

Your training combines taught sessions with practical classroom experience. Throughout the year, you will:

  • Observe experienced teachers
  • Practise teaching regularly
  • Receive structured feedback through instructional coaching
  • Set improvement targets with your mentor

This gradual approach allows you to develop your teaching skills with support and confidence.

SUPPORT & MENTORING

Throughout the programme, your timetable is carefully managed and agreed as the course progresses, with decisions brokered by your mentor.

In addition to your course tutor, you will take part in workshops led by Futura staff, from our CEO to newly qualified teachers, giving you access to insight from across the organisation.

In Term 3, trainees complete an alternative placement, offering a contrasting but complementary school experience, with continued mentoring and support.

CAREER OUTCOMES & PROGRESSION

Successful trainees achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in June of the training year.

We are proud that:

98% of our trainees are recruited into paid teaching posts by May of their training year.

We offer contracts to promising trainees while still on the course, either in a named school or as a retained teacher.

We provide guidance on applications, interviews and career planning.

We also arrange a smooth transition into the Early Career Framework (ECF), supporting you into the next stage of your teaching career.

FAQs

Can I work part-time?

The courses can be extended under certain circumstances, but to make the most of school placements and relationships with young people, we expect placements to be attended in full. Events can overtake us all; however, we try to be as flexible as possible when special circumstances arise.

What is the workload like?

Most of the courses are fee-funded. The exception, the PGTA Apprenticeship route is funded, but applicants will need to have identified a host school willing to host them and pay the requisite unqualified teacher rate for a year.

Can I choose my school?

Not always possible, as not all schools take unlimited trainees every year. We do aim to minimise commutes, especially for those with additional needs or transport difficulties. A reasonable local offer that provides the best bespoke learning experience is also a priority for us.

What support is there?

A great deal. As well as the course tutor, you have mentors, class teachers and support for well-being from the SCITT. The course is based around personalised steps that build confidence, and we only move on when all involved feel able to do so. Tailored support plans are also available throughout the course.
